Town of Brothertown officials discussed the Brothertown Indian Nation at their Dec. 3 meeting held at Brothertown Town Hall.
Several members of the Brothertown Indian tribe spoke during a special meeting held with the Town Board on Nov. 5 in an effort to open the lines of communication between the board and the tribe and to inform the board about the tribe's quest for reinstatement of federal tribe recognition.
Town Chairman Chuck Schneider told board members of e-mails received from Calumet County Resource Management Director Julie Schmelzer in which Schneider and Schmelzer discussed a possible resolution.
"The county is pushing pretty hard," Schneider said. "I told Julie we need to hold back yet."
Schneider said he received a resolution from Schmelzer which Schneider said is confusing regarding tribal status. "I told Julie we need something to make sure they never start a casino," Schneider said. "This resolution was written by the Indians to go to the Calumet County Board of Supervisors. There are way too many unanswered questions."
