Free drive-up nitrate screenings are planned throughout Manitowoc County during the week of Aug. 24-28. Private well owners should have their water tested at least once per year. High nitrate levels in drinking water can be dangerous to a person’s health and are particularly harmful to infants and women who are pregnant. People should bring one-half cup of water in a clean bottle from 2 to 6 p.m. to Country Visions Valders C-Store, 511 Calumet Dr., Valders; or from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Manitowoc County Soil & Water Department, 4319 Expo Dr., Manitowoc.
