Mathes honored by Kiel Lions Club

Recently retired and longtime Kiel newspaper owner/publisher Mike Mathes was honored Sunday evening by the Kiel Lions Club as the Citizen of the Year in Kiel for 2020.

Mathes was honored for his lifetime of support shown to the community of Kiel both via the newspaper and through a variety of community service activities.

Because of the current pandemic a small crowd gathered at Millhome Supper Club for the award presentation, but Bernard “Pat” Knier of the Lions Club said the room would not have been large enough to hold Mathes’s well-wishers had it not been for the pandemic. This was the first time the Lions Club has presented the award, taking over from the Kiel Kiwanis Club following a one-year absence. The Kiwanis Club started presenting the award in 1963.

Knier said the Lions Club, the Kiel area, and surrounding communities have benefitted tremendously from the contributions of Mathes over the years. “It’s just been amazing,” Knier said. “You were so good—you were there for us. We’re still getting good value from the hometown newspaper.”
