It costs money to operate a fire department, and the New Holstein Fire Department definitely misses not having its annual fundraising picnic this summer—one of many events to be cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It hurts not having the picnic,” Fire Department Captain Keith Price said.

Many area residents understand the financial blow to the NHFD caused by cancellation of the picnic as well as the gun raffle, the latter of which was called off and money refunded as not enough tickets were selling in the absence of the picnic. “There’s been people reaching out,” Chief Denis Mayer said, adding that businesses and individuals have made donations to the NHFD and that they are grateful for that support.

In order to provide another avenue for people to support the Fire Department in this picnic-less year, the NHFD will be hosting a fish boil on Friday, Aug. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Fire Station.
