Betty Schilling

Elizabeth R. “Betty” Schilling, 82, of Chilton died May 24, 2023 at Ascension Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh.

She was born Feb. 12, 1941, daughter of the late Elmer “Butch” and Adeline Sohrweide.

Betty was a reporter almost all of her adult life, working for newspapers in the area for over 50 years. She helped the county by driving seniors around to various appointments for 22 years, and she was a member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation. Betty loved going to local events and activities and spending her free time outside watching the birds. Betty’s family played a role in establishing Chilton; her great-great-grandparents, Frederick and Dorothea Sircher were part of the first white settlers to come to the area, and her great-grandmother, Anna Sircher-Graf, was the first baby born of the Sirchers in Chilton.

Betty is survived by her son, Norbert Schilling; siblings Grace (Marvin) Geiser and Dick (Karen) Sohrweide; nieces and nephews Scott (Pat) Sohrweide, Sherry (Gary) Maurer, Tim Sohrweide (special friend Annie Van Oss), Nicole (Chris) Meiers and Andrew Geiser (Scott); and a dog grandchild, Buddy.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Butch and Adeline; and Norbert’s father, LaJune Schilling.

A memorial service will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at Wieting Family Funeral Home, 411 W. Main St. in Chilton. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home on the day of the service.
