Gilbert Dedering

Gilbert W. Dedering, 97, of Kiel died peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, Mar 11, 2023 at the Homestead Care Center, New Holstein.

Gib was born Dec. 30, 1925 in Kiel, son of the late Arthur and Lydia (Mathes) Dedering. He was a graduate of Kiel High School with the class of 1943.

Gib was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Navy serving his country from 1943-1946 as an aviation mach mate.

Gib found love at first sight and was united in marriage to Marian Gumm Sept. 11, 1948. He worked for Levernz Shoe Factory in New Holstein for 15 years and retired from HG Weber Co., Kiel in 1989 after 29 years in shipping and receiving. After retirement Gib worked part time at Delta Publications for a few years.

Gib loved gardening and flowers. He was a member of the Kiel Horseshoe league for over 30 years; Gib also loved to bowl and play cards. He was a member of the Beacon Senior League and the Senior Professional Men’s League in Kiel. Gib could be found listening to the Jerry Schneider Show every Saturday morning.

He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s UCC in Kiel, having been a Sunday School teacher, deacon, secretary for Brotherhood, assistant financial secretary, greeter and ushered for over 50 years. He also helped assemble the Lamplighter for over 15 years.

Gib is survived by his wife of 74 years, Marian; a daughter, Barbara Vorpahl of Eau Claire; a son, Roger (Janise) Dedering of Kiel; five grandchildren, Scott (Kelly) Vorpahl, Steven (Jennifer) Vorpahl, Michelle (Eric) Voland, Kim (Corey) Stoeckigt and Jason Gordon; and eight great-grandchildren, Janessa and Daxton Vorpahl, Kira and Zachary Vorpahl, Kaylee and Gavyn Voland and Dominic and Everett Stoeckigt.

He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Gib was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law Edgar and Esther Gumm; son-in-law, Richard Vorpahl; brothers and sisters, Donald (Betty) Dedering, Mildred (Charles) Balkwell and Shirley (Arden) Mogenson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert (Lorraine) Gumm, Milton (Loretta) Gumm and Violet (Conrad) Rausch as well as several nieces and nephews.

Per Gib’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a service for him will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 17 at St. Peter’s UCC, Kiel. Officiating the service will be the Rev. Nicole Herda with burial to take place at Kiel Belitz Cemetery at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 2 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.

A memorial will be established in Gib’s name.

The family would like to thank the Kiel Ambulance, the doctors and nursing staff at Ascension Calumet Hospital, Homestead Health Services as well as Calumet County Hospice for the care given to Gib during his final days and Pastor Nicole Herda for all the visits with Gib and Marian.
