Gordon Melvin Kolb, 93, known to everyone as “Mr. Fantastic” after his favorite answer when asked “how are you doing?,” has passed away.
He was a native of Kiel, currently of Burr Ridge, Illinois. He was a Korean War veteran with two years of service in Army service hospitals. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Gordon spent his career with General Motors, beginning as an insurance adjustor and retiring in 1993 as an executive vice president. While these credentials were impressive, Gordon lists his greatest accomplishments as the home he and his wife Gladys, nee Moore, the “love of his life” created together.
Gordon was also the loving father of William (Lee) DeWitt, DDS and the late Robert Curtis DeWitt; cherished grandfather of Kimberly (Brian) Denny, Ronald Kincaid, Eric DeWitt, Nicole Baran, Kelly Funk, Sandra Heslin and Chad Dewitt and the late Leigh Marie Hannigan; dear great-grandfather of many; fond brother of the late Donna (the late Tom) Balz and uncle of Sue Balz Verzal and great-uncle of Jacob Kienbaum and Mariah Verzal.
Funeral services and interment are being planned for a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., Unit 700, New York, NY 10001. Arrangements are being handled by Gibbons Funeral Home, Elmhurst, 630-832-0018 or www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com.
