Victor M. Schanke, 91, of New Holstein died Saturday evening, Nov. 19, 2022 at Homestead Care Center, New Holstein.
He was born in Menasha on Jan. 1, 1931, son of the late Elmer and Lidea (Erdmann) Schanke. Victor was a graduate of Kiel High School with the class of 1950.
A proud veteran of the Korean War, Vic served with the US Army, Signal Corps from 1951 to 1953. On Feb. 26, 1952 he was united in marriage to Alyce Mae Karstaedt in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2007.
Vic worked for more than 38 years at Leverenz Shoe Co. He worked another 13 years for Kaytee Products until his retirement. During that time he was an active member of the New Holstein American Legion, Zion Lutheran Church and was a lifetime member of the Outdoors. In his free time he enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking and was a fan of Wisconsin sports: the Brewers, Bucks, Badgers and Packers. Vic was an avid bowler. He was the first winner of the Lang Dunke Bowling Championship and went on to win a total of three times.
Survivors include his children: Wayne (Joan) Schanke of New Holstein, Nancy (Gene) Casper of Kiel and Thomas (Tamara) Schanke of Elkhart Lake; grandchildren Michael (Sarah) Schanke, Eric (Amanda) Casper, Chad (Sethyn) Casper, Shane Schanke, Jenna (Nic) Rabe and Jarett Schanke; great-grandchildren Amelia Schanke, Roman and Violet Casper, Zoey-Mae, Roman and Ainsley Rabe and Ryden and Lettie Casper.
He is further survived by a brother: Donald (Joan) Schanke; sister Elaine McAloon; and step-sibling Sandy Anastase; along with numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law on the Karstaedt side.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmom Myrtle (Miller) Schanke; grandson Gregory Schanke; brothers Elmer (Helen) Schanke and Eugene Schanke; and step-siblings Gloria (Jack) Parr and Ronald (Marion) Kraus.
Funeral services for Victor will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt-DeTroye Funeral Home (815 Sixth St., Kiel) with the Rev. Azor Cigelske officiating. Burial will take place in the New Holstein Country View Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the New Holstein American Legion Post 124.
A time of visitation for family and friends will take place at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
