Knee braces, crutches, countless physical therapy visits, cortisone injections, blood thinners, water pills, having 2-3 vials of fluid removed from my knee at a time… I’ve done it all. And now, I was facing a knee replacement.
My name is Dean Sohn and I’m 52 years old.
Many moons ago, I first injured my right knee playing softball in high school. Fast forward two decades, and I slipped on some oil. As I hit the ground, I heard a loud, gut-wrenching “POP” as my right leg bent so I could literally shake hands with my ankle. Instantly, there was a burning sensation that felt like I blew out my knee, and I couldn’t put my full weight on it.
An MRI showed a torn meniscus, and both the medial and lateral collateral ligaments were stretched to their limits – with the medial collateral ligament being “fragmented”.
Two doctors suggested a total knee replacement (Milwaukee and Green Bay). A doctor in Pewaukee suggested a partial knee replacement, and my local doctor also suggested a total knee replacement. (Keep in mind, this was 20 years ago, when I was still in my 30’s.)
Instead of having my knee replaced, I went through lots of physical therapy at two different hospitals. I took a bunch of different pills – water pills, blood thinners, glucosamine and chondroitin tablets, and Neuphoxne tablets (which are now banned).
Three times every year, they drained 2-3 vials of fluid from my knee; but the fluid always returned.
Over the last 20 years, the knee pain diminished, yet my knee regularly swelled up on me. This continual irritation changed the way I walked and performed daily activities, and over time, it wreaked havoc on the ‘good’ side of my body. This led me to feel like I was hobbling when I walked, and eventually, I started having pain on the ‘good’ side of my body too.
Then suddenly, six months ago, my knee swelled up to the size of a softball. I lost mobility, and my knee began to burn and throb; it felt like someone was sticking a knife in my knee and twisting it back and forth.
Normal daily activities like walking, bending over, and climbing stairs caused me to suffer. Driving was a real chore, especially pushing on the brake pedal. I was losing sleep. My work habit was affected, and my work life was crippling me – I struggled just to work a couple hours.
Even though I iced the knee several hours every day, I finally realized I had to get help. The pain was absolutely horrible, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I figured it was time to have a knee replacement.
Over the years, I read many newspaper articles about the Wisconsin Spine & Chiropractic Center, and I thought they only treated back and neck pain patients. Still, I kept wondering if they could help me and if they would accept my case.
For several years, my wife encouraged me to call them, and finally, I picked up the phone and made an appointment. I asked Dr. Kroneck to give me his honest opinion about my knee and if he thought he could help me.
After listening to my story, Dr. Kroneck performed an in-depth evaluation that was very impressive. Through the evaluation, I discovered several things that were going on with my body which were contributing to my knee problem; and when Dr. Kroneck accepted my case, I was pleasantly surprised.
Since working with the Wisconsin Spine Center, I feel fantastic! The swelling in my knee is completely gone, and I can do everyday activities again – I can work around the house, or I can put in 8-10 hours at work… completely pain-free!
Climbing stairs, either going up or down, doesn’t feel like my knee is going to lock-up anymore. My co-workers have noticed a difference, and even my wife tells me I’m walking straighter! (Thanks honey!)
My knee feels so strong that it feels like I could jump up and touch the ceiling, (if I knew I wouldn’t hurt myself).
Because of the compensations my body made for the knee pain, and because of certain work habits, I also developed a problem turning my neck to check my blind spot when driving – which is very dangerous. But now, since working with Dr. Kroneck, all the aches and pains I had, even on my ‘good’ side, are gone… and I can turn my head and look at my blind spot with no problem!
The care at the Wisconsin Spine Center is top-notch! I would expect this sort of treatment in Green Bay or Milwaukee, but I was shocked to find it available right here in Sheboygan!
My only regret is – I wish I would have called sooner and not been so stubborn. Please don’t hesitate like I did. Just call and make an appointment today. You have nothing to lose. The worst that can happen is they can’t help you. Dr. Kroneck is a straight shooter and he will give you an honest opinion. And, if he thinks he can help you, he will do everything possible to help you!!
Thank you Dr. Kroneck and the Wisconsin Spine Center… and God Bless!
