The rebuilding process continues for the Chilton Tiger cross country teams. Both squads have to overcome some key graduation losses and the present pandemic crisis also has the cc community wondering if the season will even finish.
The 2020 Tiger cross country preview:
CHILTON CROSS COUNTRY
Head Coach: Rocky Gozdziewski (37th season for girls; 35th for boys)
2019 Record: The Chilton boys were third and the girls fifth at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference Meet. Wyatt Schmitz qualified for state.
Looking back at 2019: Wyatt Schmitz earned the trip to state after finishing 12th overall at the WIAA Two Rivers Sectional to get one of the five individual spots. The Tigers were fourth as a team at Two Rivers. Emily Hoerl fell just two places shy of qualifying for state on the girls side. She was 13th overall. Will Kapral and Phoenix Ladd join Schmitz as key losses. For the girls, Hoerl and Sofia Billmann must be replaced. The Tigers had four runners earn all-conference honors a year ago. On the Second Team were Wyatt Schmitz and Phoenix Ladd, 11th while honorable mention honors went to Will Kapral and Alek Lemke. Eric East fell two places. Hoerl was First Team All-EWC for the girls. Making honorable mention were Andrea Schmitz and Lizzy Wagner.
A look ahead at 2020: The Tiger boys return four lettermen and should again challenge for a top four placing in the conference. Seniors Eric East and Alek Lemke join sophomores Will Fuerbringer and Brady Woelfel as the returning varsity runners. Junior Robert Kapral, sophs Austin Grube, Kile Sullivan, Alex Hein and Blake Franzen are top prospects. Freshmen include Cordale Fhlug and Noah Schumacher. For the girls, Wagner, Schmitz and Julia Diedrich join Emma Bartel and Teressa Gebhart as returnees. Junior Morgan Geiger and freshman Alydia Wieting round out the pre-season roster. The girls expect to be a middle of the pack squad. Once again, veteran coach Jane Schmitz will serve as Gozdziewski’s assistant and run the strong Tiger middle school program.
