Kiel defense blanks New Holstein in 75th meeting of rivals

Kiel quarterback Connor Faust prepared to hand off to back Daniel Schmitz in Friday's 20-0 victory over host New Holstein.

And the series draws even closer...

In the 75th meeting between the Kiel and New Holstein high school football teams, Kiel’s defense dominated in a 20-0 blanking of the host Huskies on Friday night.

The Raiders broke open a 7-0 game at halftime with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kiel moved to within field goal range early in the second quarter but the 32-yard try was wide left. That did not slow the Raiders at all as they held New Holstein to a three-and-out. Kiel’s Charles Freis then returned the ensuing punt 39 yards to New Holstein’s 20 yard-line, and three plays later quarterback Connor Faust hit Reed Libke on a crossing pattern and Libke took the ball in for an 18-yard score.

That would turn out to be all the points Kiel needed as its defense held the Huskies to just eight first downs in the game.

Faust connected with Freis on a 15-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Kiel’s Connor Meyer broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run. Ezekiel Sippel booted his second extra point of the game to give Kiel its 20-0 lead.
