The Kiel girls tennis program has been on the rise the last three seasons highlighted by Kaytlyn Hartfield’s trip to state last October, just the second Raider to ever reach state.
But Hartfield has graduated and Crom has stepped down handing the reigns to Sheila Ramminger. Ramminger will have some good numbers to work with in her first season.
The 2020 Raider girls tennis preview:
KIEL RAIDER GIRLS TENNIS
Head Coach: Sheila Ramminger (1st season)
2019 Record: 3-6 conference duals (tied for 7th place)
Post Season History: Christina Laun is the only Kiel girls singles tennis player to reach the state finals winning the WIAA Division 2 singles title in 1997 and placing second in Division 2 singles in 1998. As a senior in 1999, she went to state again taking third. Hartfield’s trip to state last fall was the only other state appearance by a Kiel tennis player.
The last doubles team to reach state for Kiel was the duo of Lisa Beirsdorf and Laura Vogel in 1999.
Looking back at 2019: After a third place finish in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference two seasons ago, a young Raider team slipped to 3-6 last season. Hartfield posted a 14-3 record, best since Laun, and dropped her opener at state to Becky Lorrain of Wausau Newman. Besides Hartfield, other key losses are Emily Schmitz, Caitlin Muten and Elizabeth Suchan.
A look ahead at 2020: The current COVID-19 pandemic didn’t wipe out the 2020 season, but it certainly has altered the schedule. The first two conference matches had to be rescheduled and the Kaukauna Invitational has been canceled. Coach Ramminger will have a veteran group to work with in her debut season. Aria Lemke and Analiese Olig are returning singles players while Emily and Erin Swanson are the top doubles team back. They were honorable mention all-conference in 2018. Katie Dickrell and Sarah Dawe saw a lot of action at doubles a year ago and are back. Hannah Bolden and Zola Meinnert also provide experience on the courts. Ramminger expects a roster of nearly 14 players.
The conference race: Kohler has dominated Eastern Wisconsin Conference play over the past several seasons going unbeaten in duals the last four years. The Blue Bombers remain the team to beat with Plymouth and Sheboygan Falls the main challengers. Kiel could challenge for a top half finish in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.
