The Kiel wrestlers are on a mission. For the past two seasons, a trip to the WIAA State Team Tournament has eluded them by a mere point. The Raiders boast a veteran lineup again and look to challenge two-time EWC champ Brillion.
The Kiel wrestling preview:
COACH: Davin Horneck (6th season)
2019-20 RECORD: 4-2 (3rd place) in Eastern Wisconsin Conference duals; 3rd Place at EWC Tournament; Three state qualifiers.
2019-20 REVIEW: For the second consecutive season, Andrew Schad came away from the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships with a medal taking fourth at 120 pounds. Freshman Joah Lund, at 132 pounds, and Junior Jason Klauck, at 220 pounds, made their state debuts.
After losing 34-33 in the Team Sectional Finals two years ago, Kiel found itself one win away from state last year and lost by a point to Port Washington due to a tiebreaker.
Individual sectional qualifiers were Caitlin Meyer (106), Max Schaefer (113), Connor Faust (145), Alex Kleinhans (160), Cole Pence (170) and Isaac VanderMeer (195). VanderMeer was injured at regionals and was unable to take to the mat at sectionals.
2020-21 PREVIEW: Both Schad and Lund return, but Klauck has opted not to wrestle this winter. Schaefer, Faust, Kleinhans and VanderMeer are also back along with returning lettermen Jose Capetillo-Martinez, Nick Runge, Connor Meyer and Ezekiel Sippel. Several newcomers will help fill lineup vacancies.
Defending EWC champ Brillion remains the team to beat in the conference with Kiel a strong challenger.
