Sheila Ramminger's rebuild of the Kiel girls tennis program took a giant leap Wednesday morning.
Ramminger, in her second season as Kiel head coach, got her first players to qualify for state as the Raiders' number one doubles duo of senior Katie Dickrell and sophomore Lauren Olig upset top seeded Mary Van Stratten and Delaney Feldkamp of Appleton Xavier 6-4 and 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker in the quarterfinals of the WIAA Division 2 Kohler Sectional at Sports Core.
The Kiel duo advanced to the semifinals where they ran into their biggest nemesis in Sheboygan Falls' Claire Liebe and Rianna Krist losing to the Falcons tandem 6-0, 6-1.
In the third place match, Grace Ogden and Lilly Griffith of Menasha St. Mary Catholic won 6-0, 6-0, but the top four in the one doubles flight gain berths at the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament which begins next week Thursday, October 14, at Madison's Nielsen Indoor Tennis Stadium.
The last Raider to reach state was Kaytlyn Hartfield. She went in 2019 losing in an opening round match.
Dickrell and Olig take to the courts at state Thursday night, anywhere from 6:45-7:30 pm. Pairings will be announced this Sunday.
