In one of the most thrilling but gut-wrenching football games New Holstein High School has ever played, the Huskies fell Friday night (Oct. 9) 51-50 to Kohler-Lutheran-Christian.
KLC scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining, then booted the extra point to claim the win.
An official threw a flag on the last touchdown pass and initially indicated the receiver had gone out of bounds, came back in-bounds, and was the first player to touch the ball, which is illegal. The officials huddled and eventually decided to pick up the flag. New Holstein coaches said after the game that their cameras might show the KLC receiver indeed stepped out of bounds.
The loss overshadowed some huge efforts by several Husky players. Michael Volz rushed for a career-high 227 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns. Henry Schnell ran for two touchdowns. Sam Cady intercepted a pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown—his third interception in as many games for the Huskies. Sam Casper recorded a second-quarter sack to become the all-time sack leader at New Holstein High School.
