The last time New Holstein hosted a girls basketball regional game. It's also the last time the Huskies won a post season tournament game.
Ten years of futility finally came to a close Tuesday night as New Holstein outlasted a stubborn Sheboygan Lutheran squad, 55-44, in a WIAA Division 3 regional opening round game at NHHS.
The Huskies, seeded fourth, led most of the way, but never comfortably over the fifth seeded Crusaders. The win vaults Corbin Thompson's Huskies to a regional semifinal Friday at top seeded and undefeated Howards Grove at 7 pm.
A Rose Hahn three-pointer with just over four minutes left pulled the Crusaders to within 43-40. New Holstein then closed out with a 12-4 run led by Grace Schisel and the games' leading scorer Jess Diedrich.
"Sheboygan Lutheran is very well coached," said Thompson.
"They battled us throughout. All I can say is that our win over Two Rivers last Friday really helped us tonight knowing how to pull out close games."
The Huskies edged TR, 51-48, in their regular season finale.
New Holstein takes an 11-8 record to Howards Grove. Sheboygan Lutheran finishes at 8-17.
