Legion team wins Plover tourney

The Manitowoc American Legion baseball team is 19-4 heading into post season play after capturing the title last weekend in the Central Wisconsin Classic at Plover, near Stevens Point.

Manitowoc, which includes Kiel’s Daniel Schmitz, Travis Kohlmann, Brandon Stephany and Nate Stephany, rallied to beat Plover, 8-6, in the championship game.

Nate Stephany was the winning pitcher allowing just three hits in five innings pitched. Hilbert/Stockbridge’s Ridge Guyette belted a pair of doubles and Brandon Stephany knocked in two runs.

Plover scored twice in the bottom of the first before Manitowoc responded with four runs in the 3rd inning highlighted by RBI singles by August Hecker and Brock Peterson. Manitowoc would add four additional runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead.

Earlier in the tournament, Manitowoc defeated Watertown, Holmen and Eau Claire.

They begin regional play this week.
