Corbin Thompson likes challenges and he faces one that no one has ever had to tackle. The new Husky cross country coach takes on a new sport and does so as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the sporting landscape.

But there will be New Holstein cross country this fall. Here is a pre-season look at Thompson’s Huskies:

Head Coach: Corbin Thompson (1st season)

2019 Record: The girls and boys each placed eighth at Eastern Wisconsin Conference Championships at Sheboygan Falls. No state qualifiers.

State Tournament History: The 1988 boys team is the only NH team to reach state competing in Class B that year. No New Holstein girls team has ever qualified for state. Individually, Joe Blanck (2008) for the boys and Amy Wildenberg (2005) for the girls are the last state qualifiers.

Looking back at 2019: A young NH time was led by Ryan Beck (38th) and Jarod Henschel (40th) at the conference meet. Meanwhile, a senior-dominated girls team was led by Sydney Steiner (38th) and April Kienbaum (44th). Steiner was honorable mention all-conference two years ago. She, Kienbaum, Sarah Schaefer and Chaewon Park were seniors. Henschel was the lone senior on the boys team.

A look ahead at 2020: As pre-season practice began, coach Thompson had full squads on the boys and girls sides, but little depth. As the start of school draws nearer Thompson is hopeful some new freshmen and sophomores will join the program. Beck, Connor Meyer, Bryce Simon and Holdyn Witkowski-Flaker return for the boys while Maddie Boehnlein is the lone returnee for the girls. Defending state champ Valders is the team to beat on the boys side with Kiel, Two Rivers and Brillion being challengers. Two Rivers is likely the favorite on the girls side. The Huskies meanwhile, look to move up from 2019.
