Michael Volz getting a handoff

New Holstein High School senior Michael Volz (4) prepares to take a handoff from quarterback Henry Schnell (15) with Cody Abler (34) providing a lead block on Friday.

New Holstein High School senior Michael Volz set a new single-game NHHS rushing record with 281 yards Friday night as the Huskies won their homecoming game over Oostburg 44-21.

Volz did not cross the goal line in this game but did much of the ball carrying in between to put the Huskies in scoring position. His long punt return early in that period set up a Cam Olson to Robert Hess 21 yard TD pass reception that put the Huskies up 27-14.

The Huskies never trailed in the game, but found themselves in a 14-14 second quarter deadlock before a Olson-to-Hess 11 yard scoring reception with 8:11 left in the second quarter put New Holstein in the lead for good at 21-14. Cody Abler rushed for two TD’s, Henry Schnell had a 35-yard TD run, Sam Cady scored the game's first touchdown and Faton Azemi drilled a 25-yard field goal as the Huskies overcame a shaky first quarter defensively to wind up regular season play with a 5-2 record.

“Obviously, the second half was much better than the first half, said NH coach Matt Rupp.

“At halftime, we told the guys that we have to have some more passion because we didn’t want to end it this way and the second half was special for these seniors.”

Those seniors are Cady, Volz, Olson, Hess, Josh Rach, Xavier Schroeder, Azemi, Blake Mirsberger, Caden Schrage, William Meinert, Eli Lefeber, Josiah Grundl, , Sam Casper and Adam Casper.

Volz's 281 yards came on 24 carries and surpassed the 277 yards of Tyler McCoy against Sheboygan Falls in 2018. Volz also passed the 1,000-yard mark for the season and according to veteran NH football statistician Mark Sherry, has 1,040 yards on 105 carries for a whopping 9.9 yards every time he touches the ball.

New Holstein awaits its playoff opponent for next Friday. That will be known Saturday. Check back here for those details.
