Daniel Schmitz isn’t called upon to be a scorer for Kiel.
However, Schmitz scored two of the biggest baskets of his career Thursday night as the junior Raider led a late rally canning a pair of three-pointers, his only points of the game, in a 67-62 Kiel boys basketball win at New Holstein.
Kiel opened a 12-point lead early in the second half only to see New Holstein storm back and take the lead with two minutes to go. That’s when Schmitz became the unlikely hero as his first bomb regained the lead for the Raiders at 58-57.
Then, after the Huskies’ Cameron Olson scored a bucket to put the hosts back in front by one, Schmitz did it again. His second three-pointer with 1:11 remaining proved to be the game winner
Travis Kohlmann led Kiel, 9-2 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, with 20 points. Game honors went to New Holstein’s Sam Casper, who had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies fell to 3-7-1 in the EWC.
Kiel won the JV1 game, 73-55, while New Holstein beat St. Lawrence Seminary, 39-33, in a JV2 contest.
