Local, collegiate and pro sports odds and ends:
*Because of COVID attendance at high school athletic events was limited pretty much to just parents, although the student body also came back at certain points. In order to allow the general public to view games, schools set up live streams via the internet. At Kiel, KHS alum Chris Liermann had the foresight to develop a network called NEW Sports Radio, an internet broadcasting network that involved Kiel, Bay Port and De Pere High Schools. The network is three years old and this past winter sports season at Kiel, a video stream was linked to the internet radio broadcast.
Just recently, 2020 Kiel alum and former star athlete Connor Voelker was honored honored by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for his work aiding Liermann in getting Kiel athletics on the air with technical work and play-by-play. Voelker joined two other broadcasters in the NEW Sports family by being named a Student Sportscaster Award of Excellence. When he found free time from his study and sports at St. Norbert College, Voelker returned to Kiel to broadcast dozens of Raider athletic contests.
*Did you know it’s college football season?
It is at the NCAA Division 1 FCS level where former Kiel standouts Austin and Nate Goehring are getting a chance to finally play at the University of South Dakota. Teams in that league opted out of the fall season to play in the spring. The Coyotes are 1-2 so far after a tough loss last weekend to Missouri State. They play Youngstown State this weekend.
